Ian's Birth Story 3.5 years late!

Woke around 3:30 to use restroom. Notices contractions with a strong "burn" across the muscle.

They continued after I returned to bed.

At around 4, I started timing the contractions and they are around 3-4 minutes apart but all lasting different lengths of time. Texted the midwife around 5, and doula around 5:30. Woke John up around that time. Midwife texted back around 6 that she was headed our way as did our doula.

John packed Norrie 's lunch and the rest of her bag and woke her up. Then occupied her in the living room till her ride came to pick her up. Around 7 everyone started arriving. Our doula, Mallory got there first, with the midwives arriving next, then Johns mom to pick up Norrie. I remember crying through some of the contractions, hanging on to Mallory, squeezing both her, and Johns hands and at one point ripping the towel bar off the wall mount in the bathroom.
After Norrie left they checked me and I was at a 7-8. I was shocked! Ian was in a funny position though sort of angled with his head in my hip. My midwife recommended a rotation. Basically you do 3 contractions on your side, belly, back, in downward dog position, and with legs spread a certain way, in an effort to get him into better position and help me get to 10. We did this for about an hour when I started feeling like I needed to push. Checked again and at a 9 with a slight lip.
I pushed a little in a side lying, and squatting position. Ian's heart rate would drop but then Come back up. Around 9 we realized that while it was coming back up it was still dropping and eventually wouldn't come back up. I was put on oxygen to help myself and Ian get better heart tones. The midwives called EMS for a transfer at around 10:55. I don't feel like I was quite pushing "right" at this point. The EMS workers where really nice but had no clue what was going on despite the midwives giving the dispatcher all kinds of info. All they knew was I was female and 28 years old. I walked from my bed to the stretcher which was agony, they strapped me in and carried me down my hallway and out the door. That's when I noticed our fire department had been dispatched as well.(not unusual as our fire depatment are first responders as well. But John had them stay back and let the midwives work and give me privacy.) They loaded me up and my midwife rode in the back straddling the stretcher. The EMS worker in the back handed her things and stayed up near my face. A few minutes later we were under way. My midwife broke my water and there was A LOT. Shortly after Ian was born in the ambulance at 11:25. He was totally fine. Pinked up fast, came out crying and his Apgars where 9 and 10. We pulled over so John could come in the back and see him. The ambulance had to take us to the hospital at that point due to liability issues but they agreed that we looked fine. We where checked into labor and delivery as an outpatient pair. The Ob on staff came and checked my bleeding and determined I had a small tear but no need for stitches. Basically they then said we could check out when we where ready. John rode with Mallory back to the house to get me shoes and clothes. When they got back we weighed little man while I got dressed and he was 8lbs 13oz!!! We left shortly after and were tucked into bed once back home.
We think Ian was hiding behind my public bone and that he was fine we just couldn't hear him. We also think that the "typical" birthing position may have been a big help in me getting him out as well as having my water broken. I pushed much better in this position and was able to feel what I was doing which made a huge difference!
All in all I am very happy with our delivery. I got skin to skin, nursed right away, a second unmedicated vaginal birth, and no separation from my baby. The most important things for me. And I wasn't to tired to do it which was my fear.

Favorite Toys for our 2 year old daughter

Edited:
I wrote this post over 4 years ago but apparently never published it. So here it is! Late like I always am in Real Life...

As Sweetness just turned 2 It's time for me to make another Blog post about our favorite toys/non toys. Sweetness is really enjoying Playing pretend a lot, and is potty training as well. Both of which make toys and books so much more fun and interesting than before.  So Without further ado...

Favorite Toys:

1.) Shopping cart- We have the metal Mellisa and Doug one and it gets played with daily. Her stuffed toys, babies, and random objects go for rides and get pushed around. When my little Sibs are over they love to make a "train" between the cart and the next toy and run laps around the kitchen table. If she could convince the cat I'm sure Ju-Ju would get pushed around too! lol

2.) Stroller- Sweetness got an inexpensive doll stroller for christmas from her Grammy. I've made a new sling seat for it becasue she liked to sit in it and scoot it around and as such she wore it out. It also get's played with almost every day. And also get's pretty much everything to ride in it.

3.) The cat's teaser toy- We have one with a wire string and a furry "mouse" on the end of a wand. It was purchased at Petsmart and Her favorite thing is to daily run up and down the hallway with it and the cat following.

4.) Balls- small, big, soft, squishy, or bouncy. It doesn't matter. She loves them.

5.) Green Toys Build-a-Bouquet Floral Arrangement Playset- This was another Christmas gift and she loves it! I hate picking it up so the new rule is she has to clean it up before we get something else out. It's made from recycled plastic and is very easy to build and take apart since the piece just nest. Great for building flower towers then knocking down.

6.) Lionel- Well he's actually the Cloud B Gentle Giraffe sound machine thing in travel size, but we call him Lionel. He's traveled with us to New york, NC, California, Georgia and all kinds of other random playdates and such. He is awesome. Getting a little matted and I have had to repair a hole in the neck once all ready. but we love him and need him every.single.night.

7.) Cloub B Turtle- She's just recently liked this. But it also must be on every.night.

8.) Pepper- She got Pepper For christmas. Our kitty who looked very much like her ran away and that kitty was also named pepper and Sweetness's buddy. I think that may have had something to do with the attachment. But nonetheless, I bought a second since pepper got carted around so much I was afraid she would get lost. Now we have Pepper and "Other Pepper".

9.) Baby doll- Doesn't matter what kind. She has 3. all different kinds. They all get mothered, carried around, taken to the potty, put to bed, and fed.

10.) A Phone/like object- Can be a toy or real if she can swipe it. Also random objects that are shaped like phones. Calculators, t.v. remotes, etc.

11.) Bead Maze- This is mostly used while sitting on the potty but she does that daily so it counts.

I've also included our few favorite books at the moment.

Books:
1.) Curious George and the Puppies- Got this a khols along with a stuffed George and I've read it at least twice a day.
But not the hippopatomus
Potty training books

THM My Journey Begins, The Guide pt 1

I Started a new eating plan in the beginning of January and Have been waiting to post till I could really talk about it.

It's called Trim Healthy Mama and is taking the internet by storm. It's faith based and real food based. And honestly I love it!

There's a bit of a learning curve and I have a few friends who want to join me on the adventure so I thought I'd share the tips and Tricks, as well as favorite products, that helped me get started and moving on it.

Some background, I come from the SAD(standard american diet) but had slowly been transitioning to more real foods over the years since having Sweetness. We've had some seasons in life where I was back on that pretty much entirely and the mom guilt has set it. I Always wanted to be the mom who makes all her kids lunches from scratch and puts together healthy snacks, packs lunches instead of fast food, and doesn't really touch processed foods unless really necessary. And with this plan I can be that mom!

I received the books for Christmas. My thoughts were this is overwhelming and I can't do it! But I found this handy cheat from pinterest that helped me get my feet wet:
http://www.gwens-nest.com/trim-healthy-mama-book-review/
This page has a downloadable "quick start" guide which tells you what chapters to read to get started along with some handy tips.

Next since I mostly shop at aldi i perused some pins on what to buy there:
http://laslimfemme.com/what-does-a-trim-healthy-mama-buy-at-aldi/
http://darciesdishes.blogspot.com/2015/12/trim-healthy-mama-aldi-shopping-list.html

The main things I buy where on there with just a few additions like stevia and nut milks. Which brings me to this list:
http://workingathomeschool.com/2015/08/12/starting-trim-healthy-mama-for-only-8
Which for those of us on a tight budget was super helpful.

So then I implimented the plan like this:

  • first few days I printed the lists of S and E meals and taped them to my fridge.
  • First week I ate as normal but compared my meals to my lists to see which category they belonged in. This helped me figure out how to redo my meals so they worked in the THM world.
  • I did a week of S meals only for my first week "on plan", as recommended on many pages and facebook groups. I found these printable lists super helpful to keep on my fridge and refer back to over and over:

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/26/e0/7f/26e07f23d67daed668660af4d07043e8.jpg
https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/b6/46/a2/b646a2cbbc933136f7134a705b911f96.jpg

  • The next week I decided to stick with my real plan of breakfast, lunch, and snacks/desserts. And went forward. I found several yummy things between the cookbook, pinterest and the HUGE group on facebook.

Armed with my list and a few recipes I wanted to try I went forward. I shopped. And I meal planned.
My first meal plan wasn't fancy but I knew if I wanted to make this work I'd need lots of sweets the first few weeks or I would feel deprived. This eating plan is sugar free, high protein, and low carb. It's so yummy. But let me tell you the no sugar thing wasn't easy.  So I wasn't afraid to experiment and try new things. As well as throw many a failed attempt away or pour down the drain! lol

I discovered I love Good Girl "Moonshine" which isn't moonshine at all but has a bite to it which I liked. And there are many variation recipes on pinterest. Remember REAL GGMS will have ginger and apple Cider vinegar though!

  • I spent a LOT of time in the kitchen the first month. I stayed up late a lot after all else in the home went to bed and prepped ahead and baked. I finally got into a rhythm as my first month came to an end.

The one thing I kept reading over and over again was to make the plan work for you. So I decided since I am blessed with a husband who loves to cook, And eat out to fellowship with friends and family, That my "make it work" would be to do the plan for all my snacks/desserts, and breakfast and lunch. If we ate out I'd get what was on plan or close to it. If he cooked I'd eat what was on plan and not stress about the rest.

The scale didn't move the first month AT ALL. In fact when I did weight myself I had gained 2 lbs! I was frustrated to say the least. But I remembered to measure myself and when I did I was shocked! I'd dropped 2 inches in my bust, and hips, and 1.5 inches in my stomach at the widest part! The next month the scale finally moved and I'd lost 4 lbs. This may not seem worth it to some but let me tell you this is NOT meant to be a fast weight loss diet. It is meant to be slow and safe for your body, and easy to maintain once you finally get to goal weight. For those of us with less to loose this takes longer. So 4 lbs in 2 months is wonderful! And even more so for not being 100% on plan.

First when you have a sweet craving, make a GGMS or peanut whip. I don't know why those two thing helped so much but they did.

I didn't buy much extra stuff. I splurged on a few flour alternatives, (almond and coconut) and bought nut milk(cashew and almond as I wasn't sure which I'd prefer. Cashew is my favorite).stevia in packets from aldi, and a few dairy products like 1% cottage cheese, Fat free greek yogurt, 000 oiko's drinkable yogurt was on sale so I grabbed a few of those and lots of cheese!

And with that I went on my way! I'll make another post with my favorite recipe links soon. and part two of this info. My hubby has gone on plan with me too and that has changed up a few things. as have my kids eating habits and such because I don't buy a lot of the junk I used to anymore.

I've also saved my menu's and such so if anyone is interested in that I'll gladly post those too. Till next time!

Gender Predicting Wives tales...

As many know we're expecting our next little one in January. Today we find out the gender.
So I thought it would be fun to post a list of all the wives tales that apply to my pregnancy and which gender they claim to predict and let people vote to see what they think we are having.
We'll do a big reveal on facebook later. :)

stealing your beauty: boy
clumsy or graceful: boy
Baby gender dreams: boy
sleeping position: boy
Mother's intuition: girl
cravings: girl
temperature of feet: girl
heart rate: girl
face shape: boy
acne: Girl
Heartburn: girl
belly position: Undetermined
hubby's weight: boy
morning sickness: girl
mood: Boy
baby weight: girl

So total that's one more "girl" prediction than "boy". Since i'm not exactly sure of my conception Chinese gender predictions go both ways making one extra vote for each gender.

So what do you think? Boy or girl? ;)

My beleifs and who I am.

For those who are recently reading my Blog(or are new facebook friends)You should be warned now.
I know what I beleive and have strong opinions. Before I get to that though I want to let you know what I believe and why.

First I am christian. This is important as it shapes a lot of my beliefs. I beleive that we were created and the earth and all the animals by God.
As such I beleive that god made us perfect, then after the fall of man in genesis we became sinful. As such We are a sinful people.
I do not place one sin above another. As God says they are all equal. Due to this I have strong views on things deemed "sinful" by the Bible.
This includes but isn't limited to: Stealing, adultry, murder, lying, and homosexuality to name a few.
I also beleive that it is possible to care about a person and disagree with something in their lifestyle or personal decisions they've made. How many of us have family we love but that has done something we disagree with? Weather it's something as simple as who they date, where they choose to live, how they raise their kids, or as big as living a homosexual lifestyle it doesn't mean we can't love that family member.
As a Christian I'm instructed to love ALL humans. And as such it's the same thing for me.

I also believe women where created to birth babies naturally. And that we were also created to be able to feed them naturally with the breasts we were born with.
There is only a very tiny percentage of women who CAN'T nurse. Of course we all know many who "weren't able to" and sadly many of them were "booby trapped" either through their environment, a well meaning pediatrician/family member, lack of emotional or physical support,  or many other things.
I don't judge these women. It was not their fault. They did what they could. I don't judge those who use formula either. Because I am also a firm believer that women and families should have the right to choose how to raise their children, and that starts with where they give birth, how they give birth, who they choose to see(if at all) for their families care, and how they feed thier children.
This also extends into their right to choose to vaccinate or not, and homeschool, or unschool, or whatever.
As a parent I think those choices and everything in between belong to the parents and should stay that way.
However I am also pro life, and pro adoption. I beleive that it is NOT our right to choose to terminate life. to me it is murder. As such I will post pro life posts to my page.
While I am all for women's right to choose many things, What about baby's right to life? Anywho I won't argue the details of this here that's another post for another day.

You will see boobs on my facebook page, becasue I beleive in normalizing breastfeeding.
You will see posts about homosexuality on my page, as well as natural childbirth, vaccinations(I'm personally anti vaccinations but that's just me),  carseat safety facts, potty training info, baby led weaning, babywearing, CIO, Anti CIO, Positive discipline, Natural consequences, and so much more.

I have lots of links and research to back up my beliefs. I have scripture to back up my spiritual beliefs. If you don't agree that's fine with me. But my page is for my thoughts. As yours is for yours. Civil disagreements are fine, discussion is encouraged, but outright rudeness won't be tolerated. And I will delete comments as I see fit.

This goes for my blog too. ;)

Babywearing for the Plus sized mama's

What started it all:

I was asked recently what I'd recommend for a plus sized mama who wants to baby-wear.
First thing I'd recommend is to buy a tape measure and measure your waist. Knowing this measurement will help you when buying a carrier. In many cases a carrier has straps and you need to know if they are going to fit your waist.
Measure just above your hips and at your natural waist(usually around your bellybutton). If the measurements for the carrier's waist ties/belt will wrap around the largest measurement with room to tie a knot(I'd guess add extra 2 feet) then you are probably safe.

DIY Products:

For the crafty mama's I'd first recommend making a carrier. A Mei tie or a stretchy wrap will be fairly simple.
Stretchy's are recommended to start at 5 yards but If you go with 6-7 you will probably be safe. I'm a size L(when newly breastfeeding) 36D cup and a 5 yard wrap is PLENTY long enough for me. I'd guess it would fit an XL mama as well and you could add another yard per size and it won't hurt anything. Once you've wrapped a squish up in the wrap you will be able to tell if it's too long. And if it is, simply trim the "tails" shorter.

Here's some great tutorials on making a stretchy wrap:
http://aaronandmelissaanderson.blogspot.com/2012/10/diy-moby-wrap.html
http://www.elleapparelblog.com/2012/02/moby-wrap-tutorial.html
The stretchy in this requires some sewing but would be super cute and even cheaper to make:
http://lulastic.co.uk/parenting/babywearing/babywearing-three-easy-and-quick-diy-sling-tutorials/
And in case I forgot to mention it this is typically a NO SEW project!
There is a downside to stretchy wraps though, they really start to get uncomfortable for mom and baby at about 15lbs and you CAN NOT wear them to do a back carry as it is NOT safe.
Here are some of my favorite Stetchy wrap Videos: (You can also look for directions for using the "moby", or "sleepy" wrap but beware any that say it's ok to do a back carry.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J19oOkQ61hI&list
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhBmqw7npYU

Next would be a mei tie. This one is VERY easy to make if you can do a simple straight stitch on your sewing machine. I recommend this pattern:
McCall's M5678
Ignore the pouch sling as it's unsafe. The striped version is the one you want. Simply make the straps LONGER and you'll be set.
You can use this for a newborn, and infant and even small toddlers.
For free patterns:

And wearing directions:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-DlyAxI_uA

On the Market:

Now there are products you can buy that will accommodate the plus sized mama.
Wrap Conversion Mie Ties are a great one. The straps are VERY long, and wide, so super comfy. They are more expensive as they are made from pricey woven wraps. You can also look for a Mei Tie with "wrap straps" and that should work.

Next you can try the infantino Sash Carrier:
http://www.amazon.com/Infantino-Sash-Carrier-Black-Gray/dp/B005C9ODQ6
There are several reviews that state it to be great for plus sized mommies. And there are a few variations of the carrier with different "prints". So long as it's the mei tie carrier this is a GREAT carrier. And you can get them used online for so cheap. An excellent alternative to a bjorn, snuggli or other crotch dangler, or expensive carrier.

Ergo Carrier:
This carrier on it's own isn't perfect for this but This company sells an extension belt that makes the waist big enough and that is what you'd need:
http://www.amazon.com/ERGO-Baby-Carrier-Waist-Extension/dp/B00273Z0AS/ref=sr_1_4?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1379991498&sr=1-4&keywords=ergo+waist+extender

A ring sling:
Most ring slings come in sizes but you can find plenty of mom's who custom make them and can make them the lengt you need. You typically measure from your shoulder to your hip double that, then from your shoulder to where you want the tail to hit on your leg. Though each sling maker will have recomendations for measureing.
Or just buy and XL or Large sling. Make sure the product is made with Sling rings and not any other kind. Sling rings are weight tested individually up to 100 lbs and are MADE for baby wearing. Any other ring is not tested for such and has unknown weight and lead contents. It also may be welded which is a weak point in a ring and can cause breakage, or can tear fabric and cause injury to your baby.
I recommend the following sellers:
https://www.etsy.com/shop/SnuggyBaby
https://www.facebook.com/Bynanas

Lastly I'd recommended wraps. Wraps are really the MOST versatile carrier out there. And super supportive. Wraps come in many brands but some good starter LittleFrog, Wrap Nap Fairy, BB Slen, Bara Barn, and Chimparoo.
Budget is anything under 100.00 as most wraps are several hundered dollars or more. Even more so for discontinued and hard to find "prints"/colors. All wraps that aren't termed "stretchy" are woven and are great for newborn and up in age. You can wear a 4 year old or a newborn in a woven wrap.

You can even make one yourself with a little work from a tablecloth. There are many tutorials over at the babywearer forums on how to do so. ;)

Photo credit goes to my beautiful mama friends for volunteering their photo's for me to use! Thanks Tamera S., Becky W., And Sabine K.!

Sleep is a Crap Shoot

Last night I got 4 hours of sleep collectively. in increments of 1 hour and 3 hours.
As I was awake waiting to see if DD would actually go to sleep this time I wrote and composed this whole blog post in my head. I should have gotten up and written it for real but I decided getting some sleep was more important.
So forgive the brokeness of this post as I am super tired.

Sweetness is nearly 2. Her birthday is approaching in 3 short days. If you had told me when I was pregnant that I would get so little sleep these last 2 years I'd have laughed. I planned to aggressively use CIO and sleep train my baby. (after she was the prescribed 6 months old of course.)
Hubby and I tried "extinction" CIO when she was about that age. It was horrible. We both where in tears with her and finally after the second night said we would do things differently.
So we instead used a method where you go in at 5 minute intervals and calm your child down and check for a real problem. It worked well and soon dd could put herself to sleep with no issues for naps and night time and slept great for naps.
However she still woke up pretty much every 2-3 hours from the time she was around 6 months old to a year.

At right around a year we traveled out of state for a month for husbands job. We'd done short trips before and I knew she'd take about 3 days to adjust to the new time zone and place. At about a week and a half in she was sleeping fine and napping great. Ignoring the loud noises of our hotel neighbors.
Then we switched hotels. She wouldn't sleep from that point on. We drove around in the car one night for 3 hours and she slept for about 30-ish minutes of that drive and wouldn't go back to sleep.
I got up and rocked her, sang, bounced her, nothing worked except my breasts.
So In order to get some sleep, I nursed her back to sleep. Over, and over and over again. every single night. She was waking up literally 15+ times a night. We co-slept on the pull out extra bed for most of the night just her and I.
And she refused to nap during the day at all despite having had 2 naps a day.
Needless to say I was exhausted.

When we got home I resolved to night wean her to solve the multiple night wake ups. We did what I called "sleep bootcamp" where anytime she was tired I put her down for a nap regardless of time of day.  This worked fine. But night was still hard. She wouldn't go to sleep for hubby anymore so I had to be with her when she woke up and all she wanted was mama's milk. We temporarily night weaned, then when her canines cut we nursed again.
Finally in January of this year I managed to night wean her while hubby was out of town for a week. I was sure at this point with her 18 months old that she would start sleeping all night.

I was wrong. See sleep and nursing don't mean anything. Sleep is a milestone. Just like rolling, crawling, lifting their head up, eating solids, sitting up, and talking(to name a few). And for children this happens at different times and ages. Some babies are born sleeping 6 hours straight. Some like sweetness sleep in 45 minute increments till they are several months old.
I knew this. I'd read it many times since Sweetness was small. But It was made abundantly clear recently.

See DD is now 7 months past night weaning. She still is waking up multiple times at night. We don't nurse to sleep. She goes to sleep awake. Her room is dark. She has no lights except her cloud b turtle which shuts off after 45 minutes. I've tried chamomile tea, lavender oil, chest rub, white noise, she's on a schedule, and meds and homemopathics for teeth. Sometimes thy help sometimes not.

As I woke up for the 4th time last night I finally gave in and gave her tylenol and she slept. Her previous meds hadn't technically worn off according to the label, but for Sweetness these things take the edge off and wear off fast. I have yet to find a homeopathic strong enough for the two year molars.

Some nights she sleeps without meds. Sometimes she has to have them. Sometimes not. Sometimes she sleeps for 5 or 6 hours, wakes one time and goes back to sleep with 10 minutes of snuggles in the rocker. some times  I am up for hours.
I try to be strong in this. Try to remain patient, try not to be short tempered, yet still firm that it's bedtime. I wish to be able to just enjoy the snuggles, the singing, the quiet moments of just her and me. That would be noble and wonderful. I am human though. A fallen sinful creature. And as such most nights I just want to go to sleep.

I'm assured by many that one day she will sleep and so will I. Or she will move out. One of the two. ;)

The potty training journey part 1

We started potty training on Monday April 1st. (Also my birthday) ;)
We decided after much thought and consideration and recommendations from others to go with "Oh Crap , Potty Training" for our "method".
The process makes total sense and every part I've read so far is logical and well thought out.
You basically are working in phases/blocks/stages whatever you want to call them rather than days.
Phase 1: naked (at least from the waist down) the goal is to get baby to sit on the potty and hopefully pee. Bonus points if they tell you when they need to go but not nessicary.
Phase 2: commando aka no diaper or undies just a dress, skirt, or pants. You use a diaper during naps and nighttime (unless you decide to night train too).
Phase 3: commando with outings.

Eventually baby starts telling you when they need to go but at first and for a bit you are prompting and taking them.

This is where we are at.
I have been so impressed with Sweetness as we travel this process. She's gone from clueless to I peed to I'm peeing fast. And most of the time at the I'm peeing stage.
I've learned her "potty dance" and she can stay dry for short outings so long as we do regular potty breaks. Her bladder is very small after all.

I really like that the author focus's on the positives not the negatives, that the potty training isn't reward or shame based and that it just focus's on teaching. No pressure just easy.

So far so good. I'm impressed. I'll keep you posted on our progress and how we are doing every little bit.

A day in the life of BopBop and Sweetness

There's been a challenge going around my mothering.com ddc on facebook where you do a "photo diary" for one day. I decided to do this yesterday to show what a typical weekday for me and the bebe is like.

So Starting at 8:45-ish We woke up. Sweetness nursed by then and my room is too dark to show that so we took a picture after.

Happy baby with a full tummy.
 by now it's 9:35-ish.
out of bed and get the baby dressed. back to the room to get myself dressed.
Norrie play's learning games on the bed while I get dressed.

Dressed but my hair is a wreck.
 Leggings, and a black sweater.
Hair fixed.
Check on Sweetness. She's still playing and being silly.

Added a skirt and boots to the outfit.
Time to head to the chiropractor. But first...
The dogs need breakfast. I forgot something in the bedroom...
 AHHH! Running late!
Grabbed my keys,
 Bye Puppies!
